Local sightseeing
Right next to the Admiral Victoria Inn stands the spectacular neoclassical Kazan Cathedral, completed in 1811 and modeled partly on St. Peter's in the Vatican. Used as a Museum of Atheism during the Soviet period, it has now been almost completely restored to its former glories.
The very different Church of the Saviour, further along Kanal Griboedov, is also one of the city's main tourist attractions. Built to commemorate Tsar Alexander II, who was assassinated on the site in 1881, it typifies the Russian Revivalist style, with many of its ornate, brightly colored features copied from St. Basil's in Moscow.
Gostiny Dvor, which is about ten minutes' walk from the Admiral Victoria, was built in the eighteenth century as the central trading post of St. Petersburg. It now contains some of the smartest outlets in the city, as well as a number of cafes and souvenir boutiques dotted around its vast interior.
