Like its sister hotel, the Astoria, the Angleterre Hotel enjoys one of the best locations in St. Petersburg, directly opposite the vast, stunning St. Isaac's Cathedral, and right in the heart of the historic city. Nevsky Prospekt, Saint Petersburg's central avenue, is a few minutes' walk away, and almost all of the city's most popular attractions can also be reached on foot.
The nearest metro station, Nevsky Prospekt, is just over 10 minutes' walk from the Angleterre, and buses run along Nevsky Prospekt to all parts of the city. St. Petersburg's mainline stations are all within 30 minutes' drive of the Angleterre, and Pulkovo-1 and Pulkovo-2 airports should take no more than 40 minutes to reach by car.
Directly opposite the Angleterre, St. Isaac's Cathedral is the largest church in St. Petersburg and was built between 1818 and 1858 by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand. Impressive porticos supported by enormous granite columns adorn the cathedral's facades, while the interiors are elaborately decorated with mosaics and malachite columns. Visitors shouldn't miss the spectacular bird's eye view of St. Petersburg from the church's colonnade, involving an invigorating 300-step climb right up to the dome of the cathedral.
The Hermitage Museum, Russia's most famous art gallery, houses an extensive collection of art and artistic artifacts, which was originally collated by the Russian Tsars. The museum is partly housed in the splendid Winter Palace and features works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, unique collections of Rembrandt, Rubens, French Impressionists (Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Pissarro), plus Van Gogh, Matisse, Gaugin and sculptures by Rodin.
The Bronze Horseman stands majestically in front of the cathedral on the bank of the River Neva. This equestrian monument was designed by the French sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet, who depicted Peter the Great, the founder of St. Petersburg, as a Roman warrior on a mighty steed.
The Mariinsky Theater is one of the world's most celebrated opera and ballet theaters and its tumultuous history extends as far back as the Imperial theaters of the Russian Tsars. Known as the Kirov ballet for most of the 20th century, the Mariinsky company strives to combine traditional Russian theater with new and innovative theatrical influences, to create vivid, world-class performances.
