Azimut Hotel St. Petersburg: Location & Directions

Address: 43/1, Lermontovsky Prospekt , St. Petersburg, 190103
Nearest metro: Baltiyskaya
The Azimut Hotel St. Petersburg occupies two large sixties blocks that tower over the surrounding buildings on the banks of the Fontanka River. Located in the south of the historic center, the Azimut is about 20 minutes' walk from Nevsky Prospekt, and most of St. Petersburg's main attractions can be reached on foot with a bit of effort.

The Azimut is about 15 kilometers from Pulkovo International Airport, and the drive there should not take more than 30 minutes. The nearest mainline railway station is Baltiskiy, a mere five minutes from the hotel by car. All other mainline stations can be reached in under 45 minutes. There is also a metro station at Baltiskaya, about 15 minutes' walk from the Azimut Hotel St. Petersburg.
Local sightseeing
The Trinity Cathedral, with its distinctively imposing blue domes, stands just a few hundred meters from the Azimut Hotel St. Petersburg. Completed in 1835, it is a typical example of Orthodox neoclassicism, and is nonetheless impressive for that. It long served as the regimental church for the Izmailovskiy Guard, and also witnessed Doestoevsky's marriage to Anna Snitkina, his secretary. Although recently the cathedral was severely damaged by fire in August 2006, restoration work is already underway.

The Mariinskiy Theater, which stands about twenty minutes' walk from the Azimut Hotel St. Petersburg at 1, Teatralnaya Ploshchad, is one of the most famous and venerated musical theaters in the world. Known better outside Russia as the Kirov, as it was called in the Soviet Union, the theater was founded in 1783 on the order of Empress Catherine II (Catherine the Great). The theater's ballet and opera companies have long enjoyed an international reputation rivaled only by the Metropolitan, La Scala and the Paris Opera. Under the artistic direction of Valeriy Georgiev, the theater continues to produce ground-breaking premieres season after season.

Just off Teatralnaya Ploshchad stands the Sea Church of St. Nicholas. This beautiful baroque church was designed by architect Savva Chevakinskiy and built between 1753 and 1763 on the site of an older wooden church in the Naval Court. As the spiritual home of the Russian fleet, it has been the site of thanksgiving services for Russian naval victories, and a place of worship for sailors preparing to go to sea. The church's attractive interior is crowned by the 17th century icon of Nicholas the Miracle-worker.
