The Filippov Mini-Hotel occupies two sites either side of the Moscow Station, which can be reached in about five minutes on foot. The surrounding area is the commercial heart of St. Petersburg, with numerous shops, bars and cafes. The city's main tourist attractions - the Winter Palace, the Russian Museum, St. Isaac's Cathedral, etc. - are mostly located at the other end of Nevsky Prospekt, a short bus or metro ride away.
Other mainline stations are reachable in less than half and hour by car. The city's two airports - Pulkovo-1 and Pulkovo-2 - are about 40 minutes' drive away. The nearest metro station, Ploschad Vosstania, is right next to Moscow Station, and buses and marshrutka mini-buses run from Nevsky Prospekt to every corner of the city.
Ploschad Vosstaniya, just 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, is home to a monument to Leningrad the "hero city" - the highest Soviet state award given to cities for heroism and courage during the Second World War. In Leningrad's case, this was for surviving the almost 3-year siege by the Nazis.
The Alexander Nevskiy Monastery, at the far end of Nevsky Prospekt, is a short walk from the hotel. The monastery is named in honor of one of the city's patron saints, the defender of the Russian lands in the 13th century. Founded by Peter the Great in 1713, it contains an Orthodox seminary, the splendid Troitsky Cathedral and two memorial cemeteries where several famous people are buried, including Dostoevsky, Glinka, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky.
The Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic is about 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. This is the only museum of its type in Russia and one of major museums of polar exploration in the world. It is home to 75,000 items dating from the 16th century to the present day.
