The Grand Hotel Europe has one of the best locations in the city. It stands on the corner of Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg's famous central thoroughfare, and Mikhailovskaya Ulitsa, and is only a short walk from Palace Square and the Winter Palace. Just round the corner from the hotel, Arts Square features beautiful neoclassical architecture, and is home to the Russian Museum of national art.
The Grand Hotel Europe is under five minutes' walk from Nevsky Prospekt metro station, and numerous bus services run up and down Nevsky Prospekt to almost every corner of the city. Moscow Station is about 1.5 kilometers from the Grand Hotel along Nevsky, and the drive should take around ten minutes, depending on traffic. Other mainline stations are slightly further afield, but all are reachable in under half an hour.
St. Petersburg's Pulkovo-1 and Pulkovo-2 airports are roughly 45 minutes' drive from the Grand Hotel Europe.
Local sightseeing
The State Hermitage Museum, partly housed in the magnificent Winter Palace, is one of world's most famous art galleries and boasts collections started by the Russian Tsars themselves. It is about fifteen minutes' walk from the Grand Hotel Europe.
Just around the corner from the hotel, the Russian Museum houses the world's largest collection of Russian Art in a beautiful complex of buildings, recently renovated to celebrate the museum's centenary.
The Russian Orthodox Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, on Griboedov Canal, about a beautiful mass of multi-colored onion domes in the Russian Revivalist style, was built on the exact spot where the Russian Emperor Alexander II was assassinated. The church's interior is entirely covered with exquisitely detailed mosaics (7000 square. meters in all).
The impressive neoclassical Kazan Cathedral is just a short walk down Nevsky Prospekt from the Grand Hotel Europe, and was built as a replica of St. Peters's Basilica in the Vatican.
